The New York Giants

Tecmo Bowl New York Giants season preview newspaper
The Giants have without a doubt the best defense in Tecmo Bowl.  Lawrence Taylor anchors a fast & powerful front 7 with Carl Banks & Leonard Marshall being the other stand out players. They're hard to score on, & even challenging to gain yards against.  The offense however is very average overall.

Punter Sean Landeta is a key player on the team & helps make the defense so dominant.  Landeta's punts can travel up to 76 yards.  He gives the stingy defense a ton of room to work with each time they take the field.  The Giants are known for winning low scoring games.

The offense leaves a lot to be desired with a lot of mediocre players.  The good news is that they often just need a couple score to win.  It's up to the offense to control the clock, play field position, & just not lose the game.  Phil Simms has below average arm strength and Joe Morris has an average skill set.  Tight end Mark Bavaro is the go to player in the passing game.

The Giants offense is capable of putting up points, but often struggles to score.  The receivers don't offer big play threats & Morris is not a big time game changer.  Mark Bavaro is the star of the Giants offense.  On Pass 2, keep the passing arrow on the top receiver to lure the defender up there.  Wait until Bavaro runs the out route & parks near the sideline, then throw to him.  It's an easy throw & Bavaro's speed allows him to pick up yards after the catch.

  • This trio gives you great speed & high power ratings that are key in shedding blocks quickly.  Not much else to choose from on the field though.  With all 3 playing at key bookend positions they're suitable for run stopping on the weak-side, & also getting into pass coverage quickly on their half of the field.  These 3 alone are good enough to make the New York Giants the best defensive team in Tecmo Bowl.  LT is also a terror in extra point attempts as well.

New York Giants special teams

Giants Tecmo Bowl special teams report
--Punter Sean Landeta has the strongest leg in the game & can punt the ball 76 yards.  His punts mean the Giants always win the field position battle.
--Kicker Raul Allegre doesn't have a lot of range.  You need the line of scrimmage to be the 40 or closer.
--Returner Phil McConkey is slow, & the Giants don't have a powerful group of blockers.

--Field goals & extra points are hard to come by when facing the Giants.

New York Giants playbook

The Giants run plays are pretty standard but effective.  Pass 1 is unspectacular as the routes all end close to each other, especially with Simms' mediocre arm.  Pass 2 is the go-to pass play for New York.  The key is to get Bavaro the ball on Pass 2 near the sideline & he gets yards after the catch.

Giants Tecmo Bowl era
historic facts & figures:

From 1985-1990, the Giants won their division in 4 of 6 years, & finished 10-6 in 1988, but did not reach the playoffs.  The Giants went 4-4 vs the mighty San Francisco 49ers during that 6 year span, including an astounding 3-0 record vs the 49ers in playoff games.  Bill Parcells staff included offensive coordinator Ron Erhardt, & defensive coordinator Bill Belichick.

That's right...4 divisions titles in 6 years, and owning Bill Walsh in playoff games.

New York Giants Tecmo Bowl Synopsis

Sorry Al Davis, but this is THE ULTIMATE "just win baby" team in Tecmo Bowl.   The offense & playbook receive low marks, but that doesn't matter much.   Play it safe, & grind out 3-0 or 6-0 type wins with that D.  Only the 49ers offense can regularly challenge this defense while putting up some yards & scores.  The other offenses struggle to even get near the redzone against New York.

Fatal Flaw: Can't match points w/ the 49ers in a shoot-out
