Tecmo Bowl Heroes

It's not hard to come up with a top 10 list of the best Tecmo Bowl players.  Everyone knows its made up of guys like Bo Jackson, Lawrence Taylor, and Ronnie Lott.  There are plenty of Tecmo Bowl players that have key roles in the game without that "big name" factor that we rely on often to win the game.  These unheralded men below, are truly the Tecmo Bowl Heroes!

Bill Brooks
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver

...meaning Bill Brooks and pass 2 are doing some serious damage

Slow wide receiver?  Yes.  Quarterback has a weak arm?  Sure does.  That's not a problem for the ever dangerous #80 Bill Brooks.  With those 2 factors working against Brooks, he finds a way to shine in the Colts offense.  Eric Dickerson gets a lot of attention from the defense, and Bill Brooks often finds himself wide open on pass 2.  Brooks repeatedly chews up 7 yard gains catching the ball on pass 2, as the Colts offense methodically moves down field and eats up clock.  Brooks is one of the most unlikely heroes in Tecmo Bowl.

Mark Bavaro
New York Giants tight end

Bavaro in the endzone again....probably because the Giants called pass 2.

The Giants offense is not very good, and the playbook is somewhat detrimental to the G-men being able to move the ball very well.  Thankfully, Mark Bavaro plays a key role in giving them a weapon that defenses have to game plan for.  Phil Sims has a mediocre arm, and Joe Morris is merely an above average running back.  Despite those inadequacies, Bavaro has great speed for a tight end and gives Sims a legit target that can make a play after he catches the ball.  Bavaro repeatedly burns defenses...especially on the out route in pass 2.

Duane Bickett
Indianapolis Colts linebacker

Bickett is the 2nd best bottom outside linebacker in Tecmo Bowl, only behind Lawrence Taylor.  His kick blocking prowess on field goal attempts, & terrorizing speed when controlled by the computer on called run plays makes him a demon on defense.  He's not a household name to the masses, but the guy is a big time game changer.  The Colts defense only ranks middle of the pack with a host of average guys, but Bickett single-handedly makes them a tough unit to score on.  Without Duane, the Colts defense would be moribund.  With him they go toe to toe with the likes of  the 49ers offense.

#50 making sure the offense has a long tedious day.

Sean Landeta
New York Giants punter

Landeta's punts travel an astronomical 76 yards.  We all know that Lawrence Taylor anchors the best defense in Tecmo Bowl... and the Giants D always has 80+ yards of room to work with because Landeta drops bombs when he punts.
When the offense is struggling to move the ball, and things don't look good...Landeta ensures that the opponent won't be getting any easy scores with a short field.  He's one of the main reasons the Giants are the best team in Tecmo Bowl.

Dennis Gentry
Chicago Bears kick returner

Quite simply, the most dangerous man alive!  He's virtually the only threat in Tecmo Bowl to take it to the house each and every time he has the ball in his hands.  Not even the Giants are safe from his kick return antics, although, its probably been ages since he put one on LT and his cronies.   Gentry's had 2 kick return touchdowns in 1 game on a couple different occasions.  Gentry had 5 kick return TD's over a 5 game span at one point.  The guy is a bona-fide monster in Tecmo Bowl, and when he gets in the zone....all hope is lost for the opposing special teams coach.  All hope!

To even the naked eye, it appears he's about to take it to the house...and he probably will

Jay Hilgenburg & Jimbo Covert
Chicago Bears O-Linemen

Picture
You can't stop Jay and Jim ...you can only hope they don't pop-corn your ass.

You can't talk about the greatness of Dennis Gentry as an unsung hero with the Bears and stop there.  There's only a handful of lineman that possess similar blocking power to Jay and Jim.  These elite type blockers have the ability to "pop-corn" their defender and send him flying away from the ball carrier.  Not only does Chicago have 2 of these maulers opening holes for Walter Payton, but they also pave the way for Dennis Gentry to be the kick return champion of the galaxy.

Rohn Stark
Indianapolis Colts punter

That's right, another punter is on this list.  Stark is one of the best, and his booming punt flips field position as well as anyone.  The Colts have a methodical offense, and blue collar defense.  When you add in Stark pinning the opponent deep in their own territory, you have a recipe for a damn good Tecmo Bowl team.  Without Stark, the Colts would easily fall a few spots in the overall ranking.  He's probably one of the top 5 most valuable players for his team in all of Tecmo Bowl.

This means you won't be seeing the ball for quite some time.
Picture
It's like he's actually telling the ball just how far it needs to travel...

Ozzie Newsome
Cleveland Browns tight end

Newsome isn't quite the play-maker that Mark Bavaro is, but he's equally important for their offense.  Across the board the Browns & Giants have a similar group of mediocre talent on offense, but Cleveland has a better play book, and Ozzie gets put to work.
Pass 1 has Newsome going over the middle, but its his role in Pass 2 where he does the big time damage...just like Bavaro.

The ever deadly pass 2....is real deadly when the Browns run it with Ozzie Newsome
