Tecmo Bowl Royal Rumble
The Rules of the Royal Rumble:

Royal Rumble I
Game : 1Washington & Cleveland got the unenviable "early draw" as they came into the opening game. The Redskins defense showed up, & the Browns didn't get a 1st down until the 3rd qtr. Unfortunately the Browns have the perfect defense to shut down Washington. The game went scoreless into to over-time. Doug Williams eventually threw an interception in their own territory & the Browns won 3-0.
|
Game: 2Phil Simms threw an interception on the first possession which led to a Kevin Mack touchdown run, & the Browns took an early lead. The Giants offense took over scoring on their next drive. From there Lawrence Taylor & the Giants defense shut down Cleveland. The Giants went on to add a couple field goals & won the game 13-6. Cleveland was eliminated after facing 2 of Tecmo Bowl's best defenses.
|
Game: 3With the Bears entering the fray early against the Giants, it meant that only 1 "Super Power" remained...the San Francisco 49ers. It also meant that if New York or Chicago were to win the title, they would have to go on a long win streak.
The Giants offense came out early moving the ball easily on the Bears defense & took a 3-0 lead. Phil Simms threw a couple costly interceptions along the way, & the Bears took a 6-3 lead thanks to a big Dennis Gentry kick return. The Giants defense dug their heels in & held on from there. The Giants offense got a field goal as time expired to send the game to over-time. Raul Alegre kicked the game winner in O.T. & knocked the Bears out in yet another classic battle. |
Game: 4Things took a turn for the bizarre as the 49ers were drawn next. The "Super Power" game was playing out early in the competition. The winner would be favored in all their remaining games. It was a brutal gauntlet of tough opponents the Giants had the misfortune of facing during a 3 game span.
The big match-up welcomed in the idea that a mid-level team could come in late & possibly win the title by pulling off just 1 big upset. The 49ers offense came out on fire & Montana torched the Giants defense. The 49ers took a 12-3 lead in the 3rd qtr on the heels of a Simms interception & held on to knock out New York. The Giants had won 9 of the previous 16 games with the 49ers. |
Game 5:The 49ers knew they would be the favorites in every remaining game left, provided they could keep winning. The Seahawks came to play on this day, and did their best to stifle Montana and the offense. Seattle managed a couple field goals vs the 49er defense and the game went to overtime tied at 6.
In the extra period, Dave Kreig eyed Steve Largent for what would have been a big gain into 49er territory, but Michael Carter picked it off. The interception led to San Fran getting in field goal range for the 9-6 win. |
Game 6:The royal rumble reached the mid-way point of the competition with this game. Not a lot of hurdles were left for the 49ers.
Miami controlled the game with time of possession and field position as they repeatedly drove into 49er territory Dan Marino kept throwing INTs though. The 49ers failed to take complete advantage including missing a field goal, and only held a 6-0 lead at halftime. Fortunately for San Fran, Miami was unable to overcome their mistakes as the 49ers won 9-3. |
