Tecmo Bowl Defense
-It wins championships, right?-

Which team has the best defense in Tecmo Bowl?
Below we rank the 12 Tecmo Bowl defenses
& high-lite the great players.

#1. New York Giants
Defense

A great deal of speed resides in the front 7 with New York's defense.

The top defensive end Leonard Marshall is a key player, as he can shut down run plays to the bottom.  He is overshadowed by the best linebacker duo in Tecmo Bowl.
Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor are the fastest defenders at their positions respectively in all of Tecmo Bowl.  No defense is better at matching up against any offense, than the New York Giants.

Banks and LT can stuff the run and offer great skills in pass coverage as well.

#2.  Chicago Bears Defense

Across the board, the Bears have the most elite defenders of any team in Tecmo Bowl.  Chicago has lots of team defense speed, but New York has speed at more crucial positions than Chicago.  Despite that, Da Bears are known as a fierce defensive team.

Top defensive end, & top defensive back Richard Dent & Dave Duerson are key players for this defense.  They can do their damage in the run game & offer good coverage.

Mike Singletary is a great defender in obvious passing situations, & Steve McMichael is one of the fastest and most powerful defensive linemen in Tecmo Bowl.  These 2 can wreak havoc on an offense.

#3  Washington Redskins Defense

The Redskins, much like the Bears have multiple play-makers on defense.  Washington might very well have the most overall team speed on defense.  While they don't have as many "elite speed" type guys as Chicago does, they have a lot of options.

The defensive ends Dexter Manley, & Charles Mann form what we call the "Doom Combo".  Washington is the only defense that has a fast player at both positions.  Wilber Marshall is one of Tecmo Bowl's best top outside line-backers.

The defensive backfield features some decent speed with Darrell Green & Barry Wilburn.  Overall the Redskins allow you to show many different defenses based on how many good players they have.

#4  Minnesota Vikings Defense

The Minnesota Vikings defense starts & ends with 2 elite bookend defenders at the top of the field.

Chris Doleman is one of the most dominant top-side defensive ends in Tecmo Bowl.

Unlike the other team defenses ranked higher, the Vikings don't have a lot of elite players scattered around the field, so they have to make due with just 2.  The other play-maker they have is Joey Browner.

Browner is an elite player from that ever critical top defensive back position & he controls the passing attack & stops the run.

#5 Cleveland Browns

The Browns have one of the most unique defenses in Tecmo Bowl.

Cleveland doesn't have a bone-fide play-maker in the front 7, but has 2 of the best defensive backs in the game.  With all the speed coming from the back-end, Cleveland can be very difficult to pass against.

Both Hanford Dixon & Frank Minnifield can shut down the run as well.  They really can dominate any offense on a good day.  With these 2 back-end players, you can replicate the defensive approach that the Giants would use against any offense in Tecmo Bowl.

#6  San Francisco 49ers

Ronnie Lott leads the 49ers defense, as he is the most dominant defensive back in Tecmo Bowl.  Lott is also one of the best players in the game when also controlled by the computer.  Defensive tackle Michael Carter is one of the elite defenders in Tecmo Bowl.  Fast and powerful, but his position lends to him being blocked on run plays.  Outside of these 2, the 49ers don;t really have a legit option, but Carter and Lott are a great foundation.

#7  Denver Broncos

The orange crush is led by top middle linebacker Karl Mecklenberg.  Mecklenberg plays a key role as he can be used in various schemes to shut down rushing attacks, and is a great asset against the 49ers & Dolphins shot gun plays.  Rulon Jones plays a big role as well from the top defensive end position.  That's basically all the Broncos have for top shelf defenders, but they both play key positions.

More rankings coming soon
